Christina McPhee 2002

Fast connection and Flash 5 player

Noflightzone is a netbased cinematic and soundbased hypertext that invites an exploration of acoustic crashes and subliminal visual suggestion in a context of nightmare, like a migraine in the neural net.

Shot on Los Angeles sites during the flight ban after 9.11, Noflightzone incorporates Flash movies from 'Memoires of the Invisible World' launch from pages of sound and text. The sounds and texts are shattered fragments that leave a poetic trail to follow through imaginary portals….Orpheus, Silent Infrared, Peregrine, Mimesis, REMscan, Trace and Surveillance. Texts are fragments from Paul Celan, Multiplicity, the artist's journals on Documenta XI and Walter Benjamin's initial notes for the Arcades project. Sound is remixed from Christina McPhee's electronickeyboardandvoice'Naxsmash' suite (2001-2002).

The world of Noflightzone is a migraine world, where nightmare and reverie touch on content off screen. A no flight zone could be an atopia of freeze frame visualizations, like nightmares glimpsed in a flash of memory and then a crash. Neural disturbances are in the virtual topographies, like little triggers, like mouseclicks, that may or may not disclose the full memory of violence beneath the image skin. Sound clues past the visual into the noflightzone. The texts are notes from those who have tried to wake up.
